Coping With The Different Layers Of Dementia – By Titilayo Ilesanmi

When cognitive functions slip away, finding one’s way back could be tortuous.

Imagine a state where thinking, remembering, and reasoning become elusive, disrupting daily life and activities. Welcome to the world of dementia, a medical condition that not only alters cognitive abilities but can also reshape personalities.

From the subtle onset, quietly impacting daily functioning, to the profound stages where individuals rely entirely on others for basic activities, dementia spans a spectrum of challenges.

The Major Concerns

Forgetfulness, confusion, and memory loss, the haunting trio of dementia symptoms, manifest in various diseases affecting memory and daily activities.

Alzheimer’s disease, claiming 60–70% of dementia cases, stands as the primary culprit. Shockingly, dementia ranks as the seventh leading global cause of death and a significant factor in disability among older individuals, with Nigeria bearing its weight.

The repercussions extend beyond the afflicted individuals.

Caregivers, families, and society grapple with the physical, psychological, social, and economic impact of this debilitating condition. Notably, women shoulder a disproportionate burden, providing 70% of care hours for those with dementia.

While dementia itself may not be fatal, underlying health conditions presenting dementia symptoms can lead to severe outcomes. Cerebrovascular disease, head trauma, Wilson’s disease, liver and renal failure, and brain tumors lurk as potential threats. The vulnerable demographic, aged 65 and above, especially those with hypertension, high blood sugar, diabetes, or prolonged social isolation, faces increased risks.

Dealing With Dementia

Dr. Abe Akintunde, a medical officer, sheds light on signs and symptoms, dispelling the misconception that dementia is confined to a specific age range.

As the disease advances, individuals grapple with recognizing loved ones, mobility challenges, and behavioral changes that may include distressing aggression.

Addressing The Myths

Addressing cultural and spiritual myths surrounding dementia, Dr. Akintunde emphasizes the absence of a cure.

However, there’s a silver lining – support can enhance the quality of life for those with dementia.

According to Akintunde:

“Physical activities, social interactions, pre-planning, and a healthy diet emerge as pillars for stimulating the brain and maintaining daily function.”

The medical facets, emotional and societal dimensions of dementia are altogether overwhelming.

However, when memories fade, understanding, coping, and support become the beacons guiding individuals and their communities through the challenging terrain of dementia.
