The silent surge of diabetes and the dangers of looking away – By Segun Adeleke

Diabetes is claiming vast health-lands across the world. The silent surge is not only looking dangerous but portends multifaceted dangers if we continue to look down on the numbers.

There is a projection of a global diabetic population of 643 million by 2030 and a daunting 783 million by 2045.

Sandwiched within this global challenge is Nigeria, wrestling with its share of the statistics and directing attention towards the crucial management of this chronic disease across its diverse stages.

As of 2021, over 3.6 million Nigerians were reported to be living with and managing diabetes. This accounts for a 3.7 percent prevalence rate among adults in the country, raising critical questions about the triggers behind this trend and the associated mortality risks linked to inadequate treatment or management of diabetes.

Diabetes, at its core, disrupts the body’s ability to effectively use insulin, leading to potential damage to vital organs over time.

According to the International Diabetes Federation Atlas (IDFA), a startling revelation emerges:

“Only seven in ten people living with diabetes discover their condition after developing complications associated with the ailment.”

This silent struggle underscores the urgent need for increased awareness.

Against this background is the theme of the 2023 World Diabetes Day: “Know Your Risk, Know Your Response.” This theme serves as a rallying cry to heighten awareness regarding the risk factors tied to diabetes, emphasizing the significance of appropriate medical care and lifestyle modifications as effective responses to managing this condition.

A seasoned Endocrinologist, Dr Kolapo, challenges prevalent misconceptions around diabetes, emphasizing that it extends beyond the mere consumption or avoidance of sugary foods. She delves into the importance of understanding predisposing factors like family history, age, and obesity.

How does one embark on the journey of early discovery?

A Public Health Nurse and diabetes advocate based in the United Kingdom, Dr Damilare Arowolo stresses the crucial role of regular checkups for early detection and prompt care.

In an era where diabetes shows no age preference, overlooking early signs can lead to severe complications.

Yet, amid the challenges, there is hope. Through heightened awareness, individuals, families, communities, and governments can collectively take steps to prevent diabetes and its complications.

This proactive approach involves understanding risk factors, promoting healthy lifestyles, prioritizing regular check-ups, and ensuring access to adequate medical care.

In the face of the diabetes surge, let us unite to make a difference, combating the impact on individuals and society.

Together, we have the power to navigate the path of diabetes awareness, turning the tide against this silent but formidable adversary.
