Kimi Antonelli is the New Star in Formular 1
The sky is Kimi.
Kimi Antonelli’s remarkable rise in Formula 1 has drawn admiration from two of the sport’s biggest names, Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen, with both describing the young Italian’s achievement as “incredible”.
The reaction from Hamilton and Verstappen carries particular significance. Between them, the two champions have established themselves among the most successful drivers in Formula 1 history, making their recognition of Antonelli a telling endorsement of his talent.
Sharing a podium with the pair at the Mexico City Grand Prix offered another memorable moment for the Italian, whose performances have fuelled expectations that he could eventually join the sport’s elite.
For Antonelli, the experience went beyond the result itself. Standing alongside two drivers whose careers have helped shape modern Formula 1 was an opportunity to appreciate the scale of the sport he is beginning to influence.
“I will definitely frame the picture and put it in my house because it’s just an incredible moment,” he said.
He added that receiving such recognition from Hamilton and Verstappen made the occasion particularly meaningful.
“And as well to see so much respect from two incredible drivers who have done the history of the sport is truly special and a moment that will live and will always be remembered,” Antonelli said.
The exchange captures something important about Formula 1: success is measured not only by trophies and statistics but also by the recognition a driver earns from those who understand the demands of competing at the highest level.
Antonelli’s emergence has prompted comparisons with the greats of the sport, although his long-term place in Formula 1 history will depend on how he develops through the challenges that inevitably accompany a career at the top.
Former world champion Damon Hill believes the Italian has the ability to become an even stronger competitor.
Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, Hill said Antonelli’s talent was difficult to question and predicted that his performances would continue to improve.
“There are going to be others,” Hill said, reflecting on the prospect of future champions emerging in the sport.
“I don’t see anything else other than him getting better and better. He’s going to have to go through hard times as well, but no one is going to doubt his incredible talent.”
Hill’s assessment also points to the difficult road ahead. Formula 1 is a sport in which a driver’s reputation can be built quickly, but sustaining success requires technical understanding, consistency, mental resilience and the ability to respond when circumstances turn against them.
For a young driver, the pressure can be as demanding as the competition on the track. Expectations rise with every impressive performance, while mistakes and difficult weekends can quickly become subjects of intense scrutiny.
Antonelli’s challenge will be to convert the promise that has attracted attention into sustained excellence over multiple seasons.
Hamilton and Verstappen know better than most what that journey entails. Both have experienced the scrutiny that comes with competing for championships, and their careers demonstrate how talent must be matched by discipline, adaptability and the capacity to perform under pressure.
