Security Expert Gidado Visits French Naval Ship Amid Nigeria-France Maritime Cooperation
Retired Nigerian Army officer and security expert, Captain Luqman Gidado (PhD), has joined other invited guests on a guided tour of the French Navy’s amphibious helicopter carrier, PHA Mistral, as France and Nigeria seek to strengthen maritime security cooperation in the Gulf of Guinea.
The visit which was organised by the Embassy of France, included the participation of the French Consul General and offered guests an opportunity to learn about the vessel’s operational capabilities and its role in maritime security and expeditionary operations.
Gidado and other participants were taken around the ship, where they received first-hand insights into its amphibious functions, operational systems and potential contributions to coordinated maritime security efforts.
The engagement took place amid maritime security activities associated with Exercise Coastal Grip, an initiative focused on improving cooperation and operational coordination among security stakeholders. It builds on a history of amphibious exercises associated with Exercise Crocodile Lift.
The exercises and related engagements showed the importance of intelligence sharing, joint operations and international partnerships in tackling maritime threats, including piracy, illicit activities at sea and marine pollution. Improving search-and-rescue capabilities also remains a key priority.
Recall that The Gulf of Guinea is a major corridor for international shipping and regional trade, making maritime security critical to the economic interests of Nigeria and other coastal states. Persistent threats in the region have increased the need for stronger maritime surveillance, intelligence-led operations and collaboration among national, regional and international partners.
The engagement further highlighted the importance of Nigeria-France relations in addressing shared maritime security concerns and protecting vital shipping routes across the Gulf of Guinea.
Insight Media Network covered the event as part of its reporting on security, defence, diplomacy and international cooperation.
