Nigeria’s Kanyinsola Ajayi claimed the bronze medal in the men’s 100 metres after producing an impressive 9.90-second run in a thrilling Commonwealth Games final at Scotstoun Stadium on Tuesday.
The 21-year-old sprinter continued his outstanding form after qualifying for the final by winning his semifinal race earlier in the day.
Ajayi maintained his strong performance in the final but finished third behind Cameroon’s Emmanuel Eseme, who stormed to victory in a new Commonwealth Games record time of 9.83 seconds to secure the gold medal.
The Nigerian’s bronze-medal finish adds to Team Nigeria’s growing medal haul at the Games and further cements his status as one of the country’s brightest sprinting prospects.
Ajayi has enjoyed an impressive season, having recently equalled the Nigerian men’s 100m record with a standout performance on the international circuit.
Meanwhile, fellow Nigerian sprinter Favour Ashe narrowly missed out on a place in the final after finishing fifth in his semifinal race.
Ajayi’s podium finish is expected to boost Team Nigeria’s confidence as the country continues its quest for more medals at the Commonwealth Games.
