From Heritage to Haute Culture: How Surajudeen Opeyemi Musa Is Redefining African Fashion With ZULÉR – By Lekan Faizal

Lekan Faizal writes…

For many fashion entrepreneurs, the journey begins with a business plan, market research or a desire to fill a gap in the industry. But for Surajudeen Opeyemi Musa, founder and Creative Director of ZULÉR Global Concepts Limited, it began with curiosity, a childhood fascination with turning imagination into something tangible.

Long before he became a fashion designer and creative entrepreneur, Musa was a young boy captivated by the possibility of creating things that had never existed before. He constantly questioned how ideas could move from the mind to the physical world, how a simple thought could become an object that people could wear, appreciate and attach memories to.

Those early questions eventually became the foundation of a creative journey spanning more than a decade in fashion design, garment construction and entrepreneurship.

“I wanted to create something different,” Musa recalls. “Something that people could wear, experience and connect with beyond fashion itself.”

That desire gave birth to ZULÉR, a brand that goes beyond clothing production to represent a creative movement built around identity, heritage and global expression.

For Musa, fashion is not simply about trends or seasonal collections. It is a language, one capable of telling stories, preserving history and connecting cultures. His designs reflect a belief that clothing can carry the memories, values and aspirations of a people while remaining relevant in a rapidly changing global landscape.

Growing up in Africa shaped his understanding of fashion as an extension of culture and community. However, his experience studying and living in the United Kingdom introduced him to new creative influences, diverse cultural expressions and modern approaches to design.

That exposure led him to confront a question that would eventually define his creative philosophy:

How can people preserve their cultural identity while fully participating in a global society?

The answer became central to ZULÉR’s identity. Rather than viewing tradition and modernity as opposites, Musa believes fashion can serve as a bridge between both worlds. His collections combine African heritage with contemporary design, blending traditional influences with modern silhouettes, refined craftsmanship and international aesthetics.

His philosophy is captured in the phrase: “From Cultural Heritage to Contemporary Global Wardrobe.”

At the centre of ZULÉR’s work is a deep respect for craftsmanship. Unlike designers who focus primarily on creative direction, Musa remains closely involved in the entire production process, from developing concepts and selecting materials to cutting, sewing, embroidery, customisation and finishing.

For him, every stitch is part of the storytelling process.

Craftsmanship, he believes, is not only a technical skill but also a form of creative expression and ownership. While embracing innovation, he maintains that technology should support human creativity rather than replace it.

“I believe technology should not replace craft,” he says. “It should extend what craft can achieve.”

This balance between tradition and innovation reflects Musa’s wider ambition for ZULÉR. Beyond a fashion label, he is gradually developing what he describes as the ZULÉR Ecosystem,  a broader creative platform where fashion, craftsmanship, technology, collaboration and cultural exchange come together.

Although still evolving, the vision points towards a future where the brand becomes more than a clothing company, a space for creative conversations and connections between Africa, the United Kingdom and the wider world.

The brand’s slogan, “Wear the World,” captures this global outlook.

It speaks to a generation whose identities often exist across multiple cultures and continents, people who remain connected to their roots while embracing new environments and experiences. For Musa, fashion should celebrate that complexity rather than demand that people choose one identity over another.

His own journey represents that balance: African-rooted, UK-developed and globally redesigned. With over ten years of experience behind him, Musa is now focused on creating collections that encourage cultural dialogue, promote collaborations between African and international creatives, and showcase the power of design as a tool for connection.

Through ZULÉR, he is proving that fashion is not just about what people wear, it is about who they are, where they come from and the stories they want the world to remember.
