Olanlege Reviews NFF Leadership, Calls for Continuity in Nigerian Football Development
A former football administrator and Chief Executive Officer of Phoenix Athletics, Bayo Olanlege, has called for a more consistent and structured approach to football governance in Nigeria, saying the future of the game depends on building on past legacies.
In a LinkedIn post on Monday, Olanlege reflected on the evolution of leadership within the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), noting that successive administrations have shaped the sport through varying philosophies, achievements and challenges.
He traced the trajectory from Sani Lulu to Ibrahim Musa Gusau, raising concerns about continuity and long-term planning.
According to him, Lulu’s tenure stood out for its focus on grassroots development, including the introduction of youth competitions that produced players such as Kelechi Iheanacho and Taiwo Awoniyi. He also referenced Nigeria’s hosting of the 2009 FIFA U-17 World Cup and qualification for the 2010 FIFA World Cup during that period.
Olanlege described the era of Aminu Maigari as one that delivered major on-field success, particularly Nigeria’s triumph at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations, as well as qualification for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. However, he noted that governance challenges undermined those gains.
On Amaju Pinnick, he said the administration boosted Nigeria’s presence in global football politics through engagements with bodies such as FIFA and the Confederation of African Football. Despite this, he pointed to setbacks including failure to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Assessing the current leadership under Gusau, Olanlege said efforts are being made to improve governance, welfare and infrastructure, though challenges remain, including Nigeria’s absence from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
He argued that Nigerian football must now move beyond cycles of progress and setbacks by combining the strengths of previous administrations.
Among key priorities he identified are institutionalising grassroots development, strengthening governance and accountability, investing in infrastructure and aligning domestic football with global standards.
Olanlege maintained that while Nigeria has abundant talent and passion for the sport, sustained progress will depend on consistency in leadership vision and effective implementation of policies.
