$3.9 Billion Global Green Fund Boost and Nigeria’s $1bn Forest Plan Signal Renewed Climate Push
A renewed wave of global environmental commitment is taking shape as countries pledge at least $3.9 billion to the Global Environment Facility (GEF), a move aimed at accelerating climate action and supporting developing nations like Nigeria in meeting sustainability targets by 2030.
The funding announcement, made ahead of final approval expected in May, is set to strengthen efforts in climate adaptation, biodiversity protection, and sustainable development across vulnerable regions facing mounting environmental threats. For many of these countries, the funding could provide critical lifelines in the face of worsening climate impacts and limited domestic resources.
Interim Chief Executive Officer of the GEF, Claude Gascon, described the replenishment as a powerful signal that global environmental priorities remain intact despite economic headwinds. He noted that the new funding cycle would drive “high-ambition” programmes designed to fast-track progress toward global environmental goals.
The GEF plays a central role in financing key international agreements, including the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Convention on Biological Diversity. Its upcoming four-year funding phase, known as GEF-9, will run from July 2026 to June 2030, focusing on integrating environmental priorities into national economic systems while promoting nature-positive development.
Over the past three decades, the facility has disbursed more than $27 billion and mobilised an additional $155 billion for environmental initiatives worldwide, positioning it as one of the most influential climate finance platforms globally.
In parallel with global efforts, Nigeria is stepping up its domestic response with the launch of an ambitious $1 billion forest recovery programme, one of its most significant environmental interventions in recent years.
Unveiled recently in Abuja under the initiative titled “Securing Nigeria’s Forest Future (SNFF),” the plan outlines a 10-year strategy from 2026 to 2036 aimed at reversing deforestation and restoring degraded landscapes.
Nigeria’s Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal, warned that the country’s forests, once vital economic and ecological assets are under increasing threat. He cited deforestation, unsustainable land use, and climate variability as major drivers of environmental decline, with serious implications for millions of Nigerians who depend on forest resources for their livelihoods.
The strategy seeks not only to restore forest cover but also to strengthen governance, improve resource management, and unlock sustainable financing mechanisms for long-term conservation.
