The Mistakes a Solo Traveller should not make Abroad

As solo travel becomes more popular globally, it has become noticeable that many independent adventurers are leaving themselves dangerously exposed by treating travel insurance as an afterthought.

Fresh data from AXA Travel Insurance shows that solo travelers now make up the largest share of customers on its platform, outnumbering couples, families, and group travelers. Yet despite their growing dominance, nearly 28 percent of them purchase insurance less than a week before departure, a move experts say could prove costly.

“Getting travel insurance early isn’t just about checking a box,” said Alexandra Rodriguez. “When you buy can be the difference between being covered or left on your own.”

Some say timing is critical because many policies include clauses that only activate if coverage is purchased soon after booking a trip. Delays can mean missing out on protections for cancellations, disruptions, or unforeseen emergencies, risks that solo travelers, without the support of companions, face more acutely.

The rise in solo travel reflects a broader cultural shift. More people, particularly in their 20s and 30s, are embracing the freedom to explore the world on their own terms, choosing their pace, destinations, and experiences without compromise.

But with that independence comes responsibility.

Seasoned travelers say the difference between a smooth journey and a crisis often lies in preparation. From missed flights to sudden illness or lost luggage in unfamiliar cities, solo travelers are uniquely vulnerable when things go wrong.

Traveller like Kara Thompson recommend buying insurance immediately after booking a trip, carefully reviewing policy details, and avoiding assumptions, particularly the common belief that employer or credit card coverage is sufficient.

Beyond insurance, preparation also extends to planning the trip itself.

First-time solo travelers are advised to choose destinations that align with their comfort levels. A quieter, familiar environment may be more suitable than a high-intensity international city, especially for those new to traveling alone. Clarity of purpose, whether relaxation, exploration, or social interaction, can also shape a more rewarding experience.

Safety remains a central concern. Travel experts recommend sharing itineraries with trusted contacts and maintaining regular check-ins throughout the journey. Simple habits, like notifying someone before entering a taxi or moving between locations can significantly reduce risks.

Despite the cautions, advocates insist that solo travel remains one of the most enriching experiences available. It builds confidence, sharpens decision-making, and offers a rare opportunity for self-discovery.

For today’s solo traveler, the smartest move may not be choosing the perfect destination, but ensuring that when things go wrong, they’re not facing it alone.
