A new portable wind turbine no larger than a water bottle is drawing global attention as it promises to power everyday devices using nothing more than a steady breeze.

The gadget, known as Shine 2.0 portable wind turbine, is currently gaining support through a crowdfunding campaign aimed at travelers, outdoor enthusiasts and households seeking emergency backup power.

Developed by renewable energy startup Aurea Technologies, the compact device is designed as a 50-watt mini wind turbine that can easily fit inside a backpack. Despite its small size, it can recharge phones, laptops, drones and small portable power stations when wind conditions are favourable.

The second-generation turbine weighs just about three pounds and folds down to roughly the size of a reusable water bottle. Its sleek design resembles a narrow football-shaped cylinder with a screw-off cap that stores the stand and tie-downs inside. The cap also doubles as a key used to unlock the turbine’s fold-out blades.

Inside the device sits a built-in 12,000mAh battery capable of delivering up to 75 watts through a fast-charging USB-C port. The updated model replaces the older USB-A port used in the previous version and also introduces mobile app connectivity, allowing users to monitor performance and charging.

Once deployed on its three-foot ground mount, the turbine begins spinning at wind speeds ranging from about eight to twenty-eight miles per hour. A small internal generator converts that motion into electricity that can charge connected devices while also storing excess energy in the onboard battery.

To maximise efficiency, the turbine uses a system known as Maximum Power Point Tracking, a technology that constantly adjusts the generator’s settings to maintain optimal performance even when wind speeds fluctuate.

According to the company, the turbine can generate up to 50 watts in strong winds. That energy can then be delivered directly to devices through its USB-C port or stored in the internal battery for later use. The same port can also recharge the battery from a wall outlet before users head off the grid.

A spokesperson for Aurea Technologies, Vanessa Ferguson, said that the device offers one of the strongest power-to-weight ratios among portable renewable energy gadgets currently available. She noted that the turbine performs especially well in coastal regions, mountain areas and open plains where wind patterns are more consistent.

The latest version can also connect to larger portable power stations through a dedicated adapter, allowing it to function similarly to a compact solar panel in off-grid setups. This feature has made the device particularly attractive to van dwellers, digital nomads and campers who rely heavily on portable battery stations.

The turbine is being offered through the crowdfunding platform Indiegogo, where early supporters can purchase it at around $400. The company expects the retail price to reach about $571 once the product reaches full commercial release.

So far, the campaign has attracted nearly 1,500 backers and raised more than $772,000, a strong showing for a niche renewable energy product. Initial shipments were expected to begin around April 2025, although timelines for crowdfunded technology often shift during production.

Portable wind turbines have existed for years, but many users previously found them fragile or less reliable compared with portable solar panels. The creators of Shine 2.0 say their goal was to build a lightweight yet durable design capable of making wind energy practical for off-grid lifestyles.

In real-world conditions, the turbine produces about 13 watts in moderate winds of around 18 miles per hour and can reach its full 50-watt output in stronger winds near 28 miles per hour. Under those conditions, a smartphone could be fully charged in just over an hour in moderate winds or in about 17 minutes when winds are strongest.

Even with laptops, the turbine can deliver meaningful support, although charging takes longer, more than seven hours in average wind conditions and about two hours in stronger gusts. While operating, the turbine produces about 50 decibels of noise, roughly comparable to moderate rainfall.

The creators are already looking ahead to a more powerful successor. According to Ferguson, a future model known as Shine 3.0 could deliver around 100 watts of wind power and up to 200 watts from its internal battery, making it capable of charging larger devices and even assisting with vehicle power needs.

For now, Shine 2.0 represents a small but growing step in the evolution of portable renewable energy. Though wind power still depends heavily on local weather conditions, the pocket-sized turbine could become a useful tool for people seeking clean, mobile power, whether during outdoor adventures or unexpected power outages.
