The Ekiti State University Alumni Association UK & Ireland is leveraging its 40-year milestone to call on alumni, especially young members, to play a more active role in governance and civic decision-making.
The association noted that alumni influence extends beyond nostalgia, urging graduates to be catalysts for accountable leadership and community development.
In a statement signed by Gbolahan Charles Oloye, Publicity Secretary of the EKSU Alumni Association UK & Ireland, the association highlighted the recent virtual edition of its “Community in Conversations” series, themed “40 Years of Alumni: The Journey So Far.”
The programme provided a platform for reflecting on the alumni’s collective impact and exploring how graduates can translate their experiences into tangible contributions to societal progress.
Guest speaker, councillor of Stevenage, UK, Akin Elekolusi urged participants to move beyond passive support for governance, noting that joining political and civic initiatives allows citizens to hold leaders accountable while influencing policy.
He emphasised that strong institutions, transparent processes, and integrity are essential for meaningful change, warning that weak systems or unethical behaviour can derail even the most well-intentioned efforts.
Elekolusi further stressed that youth and alumni must engage in building robust community structures, arguing that leadership is not just about holding office but shaping environments where fairness, accountability, and public trust thrive.
The session as anchored by Mr Duro Payne, left participants inspired to translate their academic and professional experiences into impactful civic engagement, highlighting the role of alumni networks as incubators for leadership development and social responsibility.
As the association celebrates four decades of its existence, it reaffirmed its commitment to fostering dialogue, mentoring, and initiatives that strengthen governance and empower communities through alumni-led action.
It asked members as ambassadors of their Alma mater, should be mindful of their conducts and give back professionally and good standing.
However, the association praised the Exco as a forward thinking group that has helped in leading the alumni in the right direction.
