Nigeria Defence Nominee Vows not to Negotiate With Terrorists as Senate Leadership Push Back on ‘Bow and Go’ Culture

Nigerian senators love to bestow the “Bow and go” merit on known personalities. But, this time, contrary to the norm, the leadership of the senate as steered by Godswill Akpabio surprisingly pushed back.

Insecurity has been burdensome on the country for too long, as such, they won’t allow someone even in the caliber of Christopher Musa leave the chambers casually following his nomination as the new defence minister.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio on Wednesday rejected moves for the immediate confirmation of former Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa (rtd.), as Minister of Defence, insisting he must face thorough screening like other nominees.

During the ministerial screening session, Senator Sani Musa (Niger East) moved that Gen. Musa be allowed to “take a bow and go”, a parliamentary tradition where certain nominees are confirmed without questioning. Akpabio, however, overruled the request, emphasizing the need for accountability amid ongoing national security challenges.

“Even Nigerians will love to ask him questions at a time like this,” Akpabio stated. “If we come here and do politics, politics of bow and go… this is not a period we should say bow and go.”

He further noted that pressing international concerns, including recent remarks by former U.S. President Donald Trump regarding Nigeria’s security, made thorough scrutiny essential. “Even Donald Trump is on our neck; we have not yet asked him what his response will be to Donald Trump, the president of America,” Akpabio added.

Responding to senators’ questions, General Musa was unequivocal in his approach: “No negotiation with criminals. Nigeria must stop ransom payments, and states must not engage in deals that compromise national security.”

He stressed that the fight against insecurity cannot be won by the military alone. “Good governance, justice and equity are key. Security is local. We must carry the people along,” he stated, adding that only 25–30% of the war against insecurity is kinetic, while the rest depends on governance.

Musa also outlined practical measures to address mass abductions, insisting that improved technology, perimeter fencing around schools, and stronger community cooperation can end the kidnapping of schoolchildren. He called for a comprehensive, unified national database to bolster security intelligence and coordination.
