Writing as a Therapy – Bolutife Oluwadele

As I was retiring to bed last night, it occurred to me that I should write about this.

Then, this morning as I was doing my ‘ward round’ (sorry, I forgot that I am a doctor of books), a message popped up on my WhatsApp:

“Writing is therapeutic for me”

Now, let us establish a fact here.

You don’t have to be a published author or established writer for this to work for you.

Even if all you do is journal events as they occur, writing becomes a safe haven.

Also, if it is to be posted on social media, all that can make writing therapeutic for you.

After all, Facebook will ask you, “What’s on your mind?”

Writing often sounds as if you are communicating with people, whether they are visible or invisible. It is a channel through which you can pour out your heart with the least worry of being judged. Though this may be true only with materials you do not intend to share with others.

On the flip side, if you write for social media, writing can sometimes become a burden, especially when you are inundated with acidic responses and comments.

I must also include that the therapeutic nature of writing is not limited to what you are currently writing. Even if you go back to what you have written in the past, it can bring such a refreshing moment to you.

At such a moment, it may be a reminder of what you are capable of putting down on paper, and such writings may become ‘preachers’ to your weary soul.

Should we all become writers, then?

I will not strictly advocate that. I would rather say that you find out what works for you and develop it further.

What if people don’t respond to my writing?

First, be the number one believer in what you write. Upgrade if needed and ask for sincere feedback from those close to you. Note that every established writer may have gone through the self-doubting stage as well.

It was my mentor who helped me when I was there.

Like they say, “if music be the food of love”, so if writing is therapeutic for you, keep writing.

This is me wishing you a therapeutic weekend.

Are you writing something today? Anything will do!
