In the face of rapid global technological progress, scientists and academics have called for significant investment in bioscience and biotechnology, labelling it a non-negotiable driver for solving Nigeria’s pressing challenges in food security, healthcare, and economic development.
The call was made at the maiden scientific conference of the College of Natural and Applied Sciences, McPherson University, held in Seriki Sotayo, Ogun State, which brought together researchers, innovators, and industry experts to chart a path for the sector.
The Vice-Chancellor of McPherson University, Prof. Francis Igbasan, in his opening address, stated that the conference was a direct reflection of the institution’s dedication to innovation.
“This event aligns perfectly with our institution’s commitment to fostering collaborations, research, and cutting-edge innovation in biotechnology to drive sustainable economic development,” Igbasan said.
He expressed optimism that the gathering would yield tangible results, adding, “We are confident that our scientists will be able to generate solutions to many global challenges, which urgently call for new ideas and disciplines.”
Corroborating the VC’s views, the Dean of the College, Prof. Victor Oyetayo, said the conference was “timely,” as it successfully “brought together innovators, researchers, and industry experts to cross-pollinate ideas essential for national development.”
The keynote speaker, Prof. Ganiyu Oboh, a renowned expert in Applied Biochemistry, detailed the transformative potential of biotechnology in agriculture, health, and environmental management. However, he struck a critical note, lamenting Nigeria’s failure to leverage these opportunities.
In a charge that resonated with attendees, Prof. Oboh criticised the government’s superficial approach and demanded concrete action.
“It is high time we stopped paying lip service to biotechnology,” Oboh asserted. “The government and private sector must gear up and invest significantly to harness the full benefits this field holds for our nation’s wealth creation and environmental sustainability.”
The conference, which has drawn participants from various academic institutions, continues with further plenary sessions and technical presentations aimed at advancing the biotechnology agenda in Nigeria.
